How to Style an Entry Table, Console Table, Sideboard, Buffet & More...
As Designers one of the most popular requests we get is help with accents and accessories as these VIP’s (very important pieces) play a huge role in making a space feel warm, inviting and complete. For me, this is one of the most rewarding parts of my job as you really get to delve into a homeowners personality using colors, textures, hobbies and interests to create a decorative story, adding those all important accessories is key to a beautifully finished space!
Often times, when clients purchase the perfect dresser, sideboard or nightstand, the next task is to bring that piece to life! So before it commands a position in the dining room, living room or bedroom, consider some of these tips and you too will be on your way to accessorizing like a pro!
How to Choose a Theme and/or Style of Accessories
We all have an interest, a hobby, a pastime, a favorite country or place we like to visit, these are all things that can attribute to the style of accessories you have in your home. Take Coastal design for instance, things that are indicative of the beach, the ocean, the sand and the sun. Colors are predominately blue, green, ivory and tan, and objects are representative of the beach, sand dollars, coral sculptures, roped decor, tropical prints and sisal or rattan furniture pieces. Once you have determined your ideal theme, you can look for pieces that conjure up that feeling. Look for things that are attractive, that make you happy and smile, or that are tranquil and peaceful, pieces that are reminiscent of memories, sentimental pieces, collectibles or pieces from a once in a lifetime journey.
Display Accents Using Grouping & Layering Techniques
When choosing accessories, find pieces that are of varying heights, shapes, textures and colors that carry identifying elements or characteristics already in the space. The tendency would be to then place accessories in a line, however grouping and layering makes for a more attractive arrangement. Depending on your preference, create a symmetrical or a-symmetrical display by grouping objects in odd numbers to give a more visual frame but is also pleasing to the eye. Ensure that the size and scale of the pieces are in keeping with the size of the surface top to prevent pieces from appearing too small or overly sized.
A Touch of Greenery or Floral to Infuse Color
I am definitely a lover of greenery or floral accents when accessorizing. There is something very pleasing to the eye, they add instant color and a touch of finesse to an area when mingled amongst accessories, not to mention the health aspects of having plants and flowers in your home in that they absorb harmful chemicals while improving the air quality in your home, a must have consideration when deciding on greenery and florals for your home.
