Modern "Hip" Loft Space Bedroom
Modern Mid-Century Industrial Design is in such demand in this day and age, this design style is so modern and hip its no wonder. When you think of Industrial design a worn abandoned loft space or derelict city building might come to mind. With features like their high ceilings with exposed rafters and air conditioning ducts, raw brick walls and reclaimed wood floors, its the consummate backdrop canvas upon which to build the perfect industrial inspired design.
Although vacant or abandoned buildings are not easy to come by and if you are lucky enough to find one they come with a hefty price tag. Be that as it may, that doesn’t mean industrial design is out of reach, you can easily try to replicate the look in your very own home using some creative tricks and imagination…
With the many material effects available to us in the form or wall treatments and applications, faux wood beams, metal embellished furniture and an abundance of vintage inspired accent and decorative pieces, using your creativity and a great handy man, you can achieve this look quite effortlessly and inexpensively.
Depending on how industrial of a look you want to achieve, will depend on your personal preference and budgetary constraints. You might just like the look of exposed brick or cement textured walls as your canvas and this can be easily achieved using removable wallpaper or wall material applications to get the desired effect, then you can build out from there with your choice of modern furniture pieces. Then again you might like to go further and install exposed faux wood beams (if your ceiling is high enough to accommodate wood beams) or any effect that mimics an industrial ceiling.
Things to consider when designing a Modern Industrial inspired space.
1. Colors - Although there is no rule as to what color you choose, Industrial Design is most often times associated with rich color palettes of warm earthy tones like browns, tans & taupes, then adding contrasting colors using black, white, gold or bronze.
2. Furniture - When selecting furniture for industrial design, the more aged, worn and raw the better. Look for pieces that are repurposed, visibly distressed and bare! Don’t be afraid to mix and match furniture pieces as this creates a variety of textures and gives a relaxed feel. Look for accent furniture like side tables and unique pieces from flea markets or consignment stores, these places are a treasure trove for one-of-a-kind pieces with personality, definitely a must do when you are considering finishing touches for your space.
3. Comfort - Although one might associate industrial design as particularly cold or dull in some respect, this is quite the contrary. There is a feeling of comfort that is brought in to the space with oversized deep pillow sofas or sectionals, cozy duvet covers, wool area rugs to bring an element of warmth under foot, and finished with collections of colored textured pillows and throws.
4. Lighting - Keep it simple. Look for fixtures that are minimal, a stylish fixture that houses a simple light bulb. A pendant light with a simple glass or metal housing, a blackened steel desk lamp or floor lamp with exposed bulb or a stylish chandelier using iron plumbing fixtures or twisted steel or vintage pulleys. All pieces that will infuse a space with personality and style.
5. Finishing Touches & Decor - These are ever so important to instill some personality in to your space. Depending on your interests, bring in pieces that have an element of nostalgia or historical value. Pictures frames using repurposed wood orr metal frames, look for vintage metal posters or signs as wall decor, maybe an oversized metal wall clock. Unique pieces that may have come from a factory or industrial environment are always great ideas, these are easily found at flea markets or garage sales. Accessories like old gardening equipment or tools, factory machine components, all great options to add character and originality to your space.
Industrial Design whether its Modern, Rustic or otherwise is here to stay and is getting more and more popular as time goes by. Maybe the appeal is that it is inexpensive to achieve the look in your home. Not everyone has the option of owning or having access to a loft space or derelict building perse, however, being able to integrate old pieces with new is cost effective as buying entirely new furniture and accessories is not always an option.
Creating a design that is warm and inviting and a place you can enjoy and be proud of and a place you can call home is the ultimate goal. Have fun with it!
